Lemonade Concentrate

What can be better than beating the heat with a cool glass of lemonade? Be it a hot summer day or a tough workout, nothing works better than lemonade in fighting dehydration and balancing the electrolytes. But one might not have the time or energy to prepare freshly squeezed lemonade every time. A easy and equally healthy alternate is to prepare the concentrate way ahead and use when needed. This way, you don’t have to drink the store-bought drinks that are high in sugar and include artificial ingredients. Looking at the ingredients below, you might think that it is a lot of sugar but that is to match the quantity of lemon juice and water and to balance the sourness of the lemons and you will only be using a few tablespoons to a quarter cup in your drink.

Lemon juice – 1 cup
Sugar – 2 cups
Water – 2 cups
Salt – a pinch

  • Bring the sugar and water to a boil in a pot
  • Stir well until sugar dissolves
  • Once all the sugar is dissolved, remove from heat after a couple minutes. You don’t want a thick syrup like you would for certain desserts
  • Add salt and lemon juice. Mix well
  • Let it cool before transferring to a bottle. This will also let the mixture to thicken slightly
  • Refrigerate and when serving, mix quarter cup of the concentrate with 3/4 cup water to yield one cup of lemonade. You can vary the proportion depending on how sweet you like your lemonade
  • Stays fresh refrigerated for 2-3 weeks
