Peas Usili

This was one of the first dishes I ate at my husband’s place before we got married. It’s simple yet delicious and packed full of flavor. It tastes best with poori, which is what my mother-in-law usually pairs it with. But chapathi/roti works as well. I have never made this using frozen peas and would recommend using fresh ones.

Peas usili

Peas – 250 gms
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Green chillies – 4
Curry leaves
Ginger-Garlic paste – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Juice of half a lemon
Coriander leaves – to garnish

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a wok. Once it’s hot, add mustard seeds and allow to pop. Then add curry leaves, green chillies and ginger-garlic paste. Fry for a few seconds and then add the peas
  • Add salt to taste
  • Pour in water as required to cook the peas. Cover and cook on medium heat till the peas are done (This could take about 20 minutes or more)
  • Finish off with a spritz of lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves
