Poosanikkai (Yellow Pumpkin) Poriyal

This is one of my favorite dishes my mother prepares on Pongal festival and it is a simple and quick recipe.



Yellow pumpkin or Butternut Squash, cut into 1 inch cubes – 2 cups
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 6 to 8
Green chili, chopped – 2
Coriander leaves/cilantro, chopped – 2 tbsp
Grated coconut – 4 tbsp (optional)
Turmeric – 1 tsp
Salt – to taste
Water – 1 cup
Oil – 2 tsp


  • Cook the pumpkin with turmeric, salt and water for 6 to 8 minutes
  • Drain the excess water
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, green chili and wait for them to splutter
  • Then add coriander leaves and coconut and saute for a minute
  • Add the cooked pumpkin and extra salt if needed. Saute for 2 minutes
  • Serve with rice and sambar
